Angel of celebration

My favorite project this Christmas was making clothes for my wooden Santos doll, turning her into an angel and setting her up on our sideboard. I used beautiful German crepe paper and gorgeous gold and silver Dresden papers, that I bought at Castle in the Air, to create her outfit. I sewed real lace on the bottom of her crepe paper skirt with the help of my sewing machine and used pins and glues to keep all the other trimmings in place. Vintage keep sakes, like the brocade table cloth and cherubs used to belong to my grandparents. The gorgeous dark red Amaryllis came from my favorite flower shop Freshly Cut, opposite Monterey Market.

Frida Mania

The San Francisco MOMA is showing till September 28th an exhibition of Frida Kahlo's work. It is a fantastic exhibition and probably a once in a lifetime chance to see so many of her paintings. Don't miss this opportunity! I have been already been 3 times, since I am a major fan of Frida Kahlo and her work. So to commemorate this important artist I made my own Frida paper dolls. Reaching back to my childhood, when paper dolls were my most favorite toy and obsession. I was just 5/6 years old and would sit for hours cutting out paper dolls and their clothes until my finger hurt from holding the scissors. I still like holding the scissors (and yes, I also dress up as Frida Kahlo, when the mood strikes.)

Here is a close up of the Chirimen frogs and flowers and of a little toy I bought in Tokyo, called Sonny Angel. These little doll babies come with different hats, that look either like fruit or vegetables or animal heads. I only got this little grape guy, but wished I had bought these other ones too.
